Image Galleries

Images have been taken from the extensive special archives and collections of the Royal Commission. Many of these have been digitised for the first time as part of this project.

The Royal Commission, working in collaboration with Luminous, have carried out laser scanning of Tintern Abbey and St Winefride's Chapel in Holywell. Laser scanning enables the rapid collection of 3D data in great detail and to millimetre accuracy.

Virtual Reality Experience

The Virtual Reality experience of Tintern Abbey has been produced by the Royal Commission in collaboration with Luminous. For this experience, Luminous carried out a 3D laser scan of the entire site in December 2017.

Digital Reconstructions and Animations

The Royal Commission has used computer modelling and animation to reconstruct prominent sites, their construction and their work processes.

Interactive Gigapixel Tours

The interactive Gigapixel tours on this website have been produced by the Royal Commission. Each of the views has been created from over 400 photographs which have been digitally stitched together and projected into a virtual 360° sphere.

Stereoscopic Photographs

The National Monuments Record of Wales holds hundreds of historic stereoscopic photographs – printed photographic pairs that reveal a 3D image when viewed through 3D glasses.
